Context
I applied this thinking skills in a couple of ways. Starting with my history, I analyzed the art piece in context of the war. I took the painting and researched how the war correlates to the painting. I placed myself in the shoes of the painter and tried to imagine what symbolism he would use in a time so sad and depressing. For the art piece context was applied when I when researching why these soldiers made these carving. I tried to represent what the soldiers may have been feeling through the use of the eagle flying away, how they just wanted to be free from the war. For my la portion I talked about how the AEF art program was used to represent the war in a new light. I looked at how in that time, it was hard to get good pictures and with a painting, you could tell not only what happened, but what happened from the eyes of one of the soldiers.
About My History Portion
For my history portion I annualized an art program from world war one called the AEF Art Program. This program hand picked eight artist to be sent to war and represent and document the war through art instead of photos and books. I researched one of these artists in particular, a man named William James Alyward. I started by providing a quick background of his life before the war and then discussed two of his painting by the names of "His Buckie" and "Sniper at Chateau Thierry." I then discussed how to two related to the war overall.

About My Art Piece
My art piece is designed after carving that were made by world war one soldiers who stayed in old queries for extended periods of time. These carvings often included flags and other representations of ones nation. They also often included religious beliefs represented in many different ways. In my carving I depicted a eagle carrying a American flag flying away from two trenches with a river running in-between them. This represents a soul (the eagle) ascending to heaven (flying away from the trenches) holding on to the belief of freedom and the idea that all men were created equal under god (holding the American Flag). The river then represented the disagreements the nations had coming
in-between them. I decided on this as i felt it best represented all parts of the war. It started by representing how terrible trench warfare was, as the eagle/soul was getting away from the trenches, as they were so bad anywhere else seemed like heaven. It also represented the amount of lives lost fighting for freedom, the eagle/soul leaving but still grasping the flag.

About My L.A. Portion
For my L.A. portion I did an art analysis. I analyzed one of the many great example of the AEF programs work. I went through there great use of lines, shapes, shadow, and symbolism. I chose a piece that spoke to me in more the one way and allowed me to relate to the war on a more personal level.
